The genesis of MASSA can be traced back to the pre Independence era, when it was known as London Committee (Asian Seaman), being a quasi-formal setting.
This group oversaw the appointment of Asian seafarers on British owned ships.
Post-independence, the name changed to Owners Agents Committee (OACC)
Meanwhile, with changing times and certification requirements, OACC set up the first English Language laboratory for Indian ratings at LBS College.
When STCW 1978 Convention came in to force in April 1984, OACC assisted in setting up the Tanker Safety and Chemical Tanker Safety courses, as mandated under Chapter V of STCW, at LBS college.
In 1992, OACC changed its name to Maritime Association of Ship-owners, Ship managers and Agents (MASSA) and registered as a Section 25 company.
By late-90’s the Government of India decided to ‘open up’ the Maritime Training and education sector to enable cope up with the demand for increased training requirements fuelled by growth in seafarer numbers and demand by companies.
MASSA then set up a small ‘training centre’ in 1999 to conduct some of the Basic Safety courses, as required by STCW 1995 amendments.
In the year 2000, MASSA acquired premises at the Great Eastern Summit (CBD Belapur), which has since grown in leaps and bounds, with support of seafarers.
Today, the Academy has student footfall of 200 per day, attending a plethora of DGS approved Competency, Simulator and certificate of proficiency courses.
This facility was recognized as amongst the best in the country during the 2023 NMDC celebrations!
In 2015, MASSA set up a training facility in Chennai to cater to an ever growing demand, and the need to expand the base of quality maritime education to other parts of country. This facility too, conducts an array of DGS approved course- competency, modular and simulator.
Both the Academies are Graded “A1- Outstanding” by Classification Society and all their processes are certified by ABS to ISO 9001-2015 standards.
